National Hispanic SMP, with the support of its affiliates, provided peer-to-peer outreach during NHCOA’s 2009 Conference, Plaza del Intercambio, a unique gathering place where older adults and their families benefitted from a wide variety of invaluable information regarding health and wellbeing. At the placita our abuelitos received information (through charlas) on how to detect, prevent, and report Medicare fraud; with booths featuring health screenings, flu shots, information about prevention and control of diabetes. There were approximately 243 screenings performed during the Conference with the collaboration of the DC Department of Health, Vida Senior Centers, the Hispanic Institute for Blindness Prevention, and Dr. Lee, who provided screenings at no cost to Hispanic older adults who attended NHCOA’s Conference.
